That’s why we’re proud to celebrate Next Step of West Michigan (NSWM) for receiving the 2025 Wooden Globe Award for Educator of the Year, honoring their outstanding workforce training and community impact.
The Wooden Globe Awards, presented annually by the Wood Industry Association (WIA), recognize excellence in the woodworking industry. The Educator of the Year award specifically honors an educational institution or training program that demonstrates excellence in preparing individuals for careers in the woodworking industry. Honorees are chosen for their advocacy, innovation, and impact on workforce development in the wood sector.
NSWM, a faith-based nonprofit rooted in Grand Rapids, is doing just that. Their program serves individuals facing employment barriers—like housing insecurity, incarceration history, or addiction—and equips them with in-demand skills for a new start in the trades. Just as importantly, NSWM is also reaching the next generation: their high school-level manufacturing and woodworking program introduces students to real-world job skills early, helping bridge the gap between school and career.
Earlier this year, Ritter partnered with NSWM to support this mission by donating professional- grade woodworking equipment to their training facility. The contribution included a face frame and door clamping table, a pocket hole joinery machine, and a horizontal belt sander—core tools that mirror what’s used in professional cabinetry and woodworking shops. This equipment gives trainees valuable experience with industry-standard processes, boosting their confidence and employability.
